What is the Healthy Kids Product Registration Scheme?

The Healthy Kids Association has been promoting healthy food choices through its Product Registration Scheme since 1993.

Healthy Kids Association has developed its own Nutrient Criteria, which is based on the Fresh Tastes @ School Strategy guidelines. The Healthy Kids Nutrient Criteria are more comprehensive. Food products are assessed against the Healthy Kids Nutrient Criteria and, if they pass, are allocated a GREEN or AMBER rating, representing the best commercial products available for school canteens. As a part of the Registration Scheme, Healthy Kids runs a Compliance Program that undertakes laboratory testing to ensure nutrition information panels are correct and to ensure that all products are correctly represented as GREEN or AMBER.

All registered Healthy Kids Products are published in the Healthy Kids School Canteen Buyers’ Guide which is mailed out at the beginning of Term 1 to schools across Australia and is also available online.

The Healthy Kids Product Registration Scheme is a highly regarded and trusted program assisting schools across Australia to make healthy choices, easy choices.

Advertising in the Buyers’ Guide

All advertisements in this publication promote foods that have gone through the rigorous registration process and meet the Healthy Kids Nutrient Criteria. Only currently registered products are permitted to advertise in Healthy Kids publications.

Companies with registered products are permitted to display the Healthy Kids Registered Product Logo under licence. The Healthy Kids Registered Product Logo is a well-recognised symbol which identifies that a product has met the Healthy Kids Nutrient Criteria and is an actively Registered Product. Products with the Healthy Kids Registered Product Logo are the approved better choices for school canteens.

All advertising material appearing in Healthy Kids Publications or displaying the Healthy Kids Registered Product Logo is assessed for accuracy as a part of the Compliance Program.
