Canteen Worker's Wage Information
Healthy Kids Association has been researching the impact of recent national award changes as they apply to canteen staff. As part of this process we made contact with the Fair Work Ombudsman to confirm our reading of the various awards.
Applicable Award Confirmation with the Fair Work Ombudsman is as follows:
P&C and Principal run canteens - Educational Services (Schools) General Staff Award 2010 (MA000076).
The National Agreement Preserving Shop Employees (NSW State Award (AN120499) no longer applies to any canteen staff members from July 1st 2010.

Healthy Kids Association will undertake to provide ongoing advice to members on the rates of pay and any changes to the applicable Award as a service and component of membership to the Association.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Tax
All employees must complete an ATO (Australian Taxation Office) Employment Declaration Form and supply their TFN (Tax File Number).
An appropriate amount of tax should be withheld each pay period. The money withheld should be declared and paid to the ATO. For information on taxation go to www.ato.gov.au
Superannuation
Under the Superannuation Guarantee, employers are legally bound to make superannuation contributions over and above the employees wage on behalf of all employees who are between 18 and 69 years old (inclusive), are paid $450 (before tax) or more in salary or wages in a month and work full-time, part-time or on a casual basis. (NOTE: the Hospitality Industry Award has a lower wage minimum of $350 per month).
If you are eligible for super, your employer must pay a minimum of 9% of your earnings for your ordinary hours of work into your super account each quarter.

Insurance and Worker's Compensation
Canteens must ensure that they have a Workers Compensation Insurance Policy for all paid canteen employees. In addition to this it is highly recommended that school canteens have appropriate insurance that covers:
- Loss of damage to canteen property and the property of volunteers
- Theft of property and money
- Machinery breakdown and spoilage of food stock
- Reimbursement of excess, loss of no claim bonus, hire of replacement vehicles for volunteers when involved in an accident in their own cars, traveling to and from home
- Personal Accident insurance for your volunteers with NO upper age limit, from the time they leave home until the time they return home
- Liability - injury or damage to the public including injury to volunteers
- Professional Indemnity, Directors and Officers
Long Service Leave
When an employee has been employed by the same employer for 10 years they are entitled to 2 months (8.67 weeks) paid long service leave, this includes full-time, part-time and casual employees.
A cumulative record should be kept for all paid canteen staff and sufficient funds should be set aside each pay period to cover this leave.
