Microwave Oven Testing
Schools and offices may have received information from companies offering to test microwave ovens for leakage.
WorkCover NSW has advised that there is no need for regular testing unless there are obvious signs of damage or wear.
The Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 2001 requires that manufacturers of microwave ovens comprehensively test each oven before sale. Ovens only need to be retested if there has been damage to the seals or doors, or if the oven is dropped, or catches alight.
Microwave ovens should always be operated in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Simple steps can be taken to ensure safe operation.
Before using a microwave oven, check that:
- The surface of the door is not damaged.
- The door fits squarely and securely and opens and closes smoothly.
- The door hinges are in good condition.
- The oven is clean and, in particular, the door edges and interior surrounds are not covered with food or burnt material.
- No corrosion is evident on the door, the door hinges or the oven interior.
If a microwave oven in your workplace shows any sign of damage, arrange to have it serviced and tested immediately.
